Coral trees (Erythrina) grow in tropical and subtropical areas around the world, and feature in the visual iconography of Africa, South America, the USA, Southeast Asia and the Far East. Their stunning red-orange flowers brighten the winter landscape, letting the people know it’s time to plant their crops and providing food and shelter for many birds and small animals. It’s no wonder the seeds of these amazing trees are known in many cultures as “lucky beans”! Many birds feed off the nectar found in coral flowers, including hummingbirds, starlings and sunbirds. The birds in this painting are malachite sunbirds, indigenous to Southern Africa
